OUR HISTORY
October 4, 1991
THE IDEA
The idea for the Swiss Society for Endodontology arose on Friday, October 4, 1991, during a meeting of ESE delegates in Cannes and originated from Dr. Wladimir Adlivankine and Dr. Peter Guldener. Subsequently, a meeting was arranged in Bern. The founding members of the SSE were Dr. Wladimir Adlivankine ( †2010), Dr. Michel Cergneux, Peter Guldener ( †1995) and Dr. Ramachandran Nair.
From these humble beginnings grew today's society, which now has over 300 members out of approximately 3000 practicing dentists in Switzerland.
At the annual congress, over 300 members and non-members regularly meet. The congresses originally took place in the university cities of Basel, Bern, Geneva and Zurich; subsequently, congresses were also held in Lausanne and Zug.
Recently, specialization in endodontology in Switzerland, in step with current developments in neighboring Europe, has found its way into universities and is now also recognized as a dental specialization (WBA further education title of the SSO).
The society played a central role in this.
WHAT IS ENDODONTOLOGY?
An endodontologist can be defined as a dentist specializing in endodontology.
Endodontics includes the etiology, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the pulp, tooth root and periapical region. According to current usage, this term is narrower than endodontology, which refers to the scientific study of the pulp in both health and disease. However, the two terms are sometimes used interchangeably (according to Dorland’s Medical Dictionary, 29th edition, trans.).
